2001-02 IN REVIEW
Record: 19-9-1

Scott Atkinson took over the reigns of the Dinos hockey team in August 2001 and guided the Dinos to a 16-11-1 in Conference regular season action which included three one goal losses to the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Calgary was ranked in the CIS Top Ten the entire season. The Dinos swept Lethbridge in the opening round of the Conference playoffs before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the final game of their Conference semi-final depriving the Dinos a chance at going to the National Tournament.

Ken McKay was the team’s leading point getter with 40 points (20 goals and 20 assists) and was a first team Conference all-star and honorable mention CIS All-Canadian. Goaltender Scott Rideout and defenseman Mike Muzechka earned second team Conference all-star recognition.

COACH PROFILE

SCOTT ATKINSON has been named Head Coach effective immediately.

Atkinson replaces Tim Bothwell who resigned in late June 2001 to become
Assistant Coach of the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League.

Atkinson is no stranger to Calgary hockey people and sporting public in
Calgary having served as Head Coach of the Mount Royal College Cougars
of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference for the past eight seasons
(1992-1995, 1998-2001) and served as the Cougars assistant coach for
eight previous seasons (1984-91).

During his tenure at Mount Royal he amassed a 73% winning percentage
(151-53-8) during the regular season and 60.5% winning percentage
(26-17) in post season play. His teams captured five ACAC titles and a
trio of Canadian College Athletic Association titles (1998, 1999, and
2001).

While at MRC his players’ graduation/transfer rate was 92%.

Atkinson also was Head Coach of the Calgary Radz Roller Hockey Team in
1994 winning the Northwest Division Championship.

A native Calgarian, Atkinson played college hockey at Northern Arizona
University in Flagstaff, Arizona graduating with a Bachelor of Science
in Physical Education and from the University of Montana in Missoula,
Montana with a Master of Science in Physical Education.

Atkinson has had a strong affinity to the Dinos program, having coached
44 players at Mount Royal College that eventually went on to play for
the Dinos.

In addition to being the hockey coach at Mount Royal, Atkinson was a
tenured instructor in the Department of Physical Education & Recreation
Studies and has completed eleven credit hours towards the Doctoral
Program in Education at the University of Montana.

“Scott has had an incredibly successful team at Mount Royal for a
number of years and the Dinos have benefited from his mentoring of some
of our best players. He is a players coach and I think it is only a
natural progression for him to come to the University of Calgary,”
states Wilson.“I am really committed to education and athletics. This is
a natural progression for me to develop as a coach. The University of
Calgary is an outstanding opportunity for me to be involved with
university athletics at the highest level in Canada,” states Atkinson.

Atkinson is married to wife, Janice, and they have one daughter, Kelsi
aged 11.

Acting as an assistant captain last season, Trevor was second in scoring for the Dinos with 34 points (20-14-34). This will be Trevor’s last season with the Dinos and with a taste of potentially making the Nationals last year, he should be geared for another great season.  He had an impressive freshman season with the Dinos, which included being named to the Canada West all-freshman team in 1998-1999.  In addition to this award, Trevor won a Royal Bank Academic All-Canadian Award at the U of C in 2000-2001.  Trevor is a quiet offensive threat leading all Canada West players in shorthanded goals with 2 and ranking third overall in game-winning goals with four. A former competitor with the UBC Thunderbirds, Chris is now part of the U of C Dinos in his freshman year with the club.  With a height of six feet and three inches and a weight of 230 pounds, Chris will definitely provide the defensive corp. with size and strength.  In addition to his size and strength, Chris will bring the mentality of “always doing everything the best you can.”  He learned this lesson from former coaches Kevin Kobelka, Don Nachbaur, and Al Tuer.  Chris is also no stranger to adversity, one of his biggest challenges was coming back from back surgery in 1998.

Craig saw limited play last year, however, with the loss of Defenseman Dallas Fallscheer he should see more action in the 2002-2003 season.  Craig enters his sophomore season with the Dinos after playing many seasons in the WHL and AJHL.  Prior to playing with Dinos he split time in the WHL with Edmonton, Lethbridge, and Moose Jaw in 1996-1999.  Craig has won a Junior A National Championship in 1999-00 (Royal Bank Cup) while playing for the Ft. McMurray Oil Barons, in that same season he was named to the First Team All-star roster in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. After finishing his Kinesiology degree Craig plans to play professional European hockey and then enter the sports industry.

A speed forward, Jordan uses quick strides to beat out opponents to the puck and to the net.
Jordan is one of the Dinos smaller forwards, but he is more than happy to prove that he deserves to be on this team despite his stature.  He comes into his second season with the Dinos, however, he came in only during the second half of the season as he transferred over from Acadia University with teammate Drew Kehler. Jordan comes from a hockey family, his father, Milt, and his Uncle, Bruce Walker, played hockey for the Nipawin Hawks (SJHL).  He brother Brett played for the Saskatoon Rage and Kindersley Klippers (SJHL). Prior to attending Acadia University, Jordan spent five years playing 334 games in the WHL with four teams. Jordan made the jump to the WHL directly from Bantam hockey.

While with Brandon he played with current Dinos defenseman Jason Boyd.  Josh is an excellent student he was on the honour roll three consecutive years at Bishop Carroll High School.  He is currently enrolled in the Management program, where his concentration is in Finance.

Jeffery thinks defense first when playing hockey, even though he was originally placed as a forward.
Jeffrey credits his coaches Dean Snyl and Ted Graling for changing his position from forward to defense.  A fundamental element of the defensive corps, Jeffery saw action in all 28-conference games.  He is entering his fourth season with the Dinos and will be among several veterans returning from last year.  Jeffrey’s most prized possessions are the two gold medals he won during provincials in minor hockey.  His other brother, Darren, currently plays for Princeton University men’s hockey team.

NEWS

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY ANNOUNCES MEN’S ICE HOCKEY COACH:

The University of Calgary did not have to go very far to find the fifth
hockey coach since the Dinos started in Canada West competition in
1964-65. Athletic Director Don Wilson, today announced that 48-year-old
SCOTT ATKINSON has been named Head Coach effective immediately.

He is a players coach and I think it is only a
natural progression for him to come to the University of Calgary,”
states Wilson.  “I am really committed to education and athletics. This is
a natural progression for me to develop as a coach. The University of
Calgary is an outstanding opportunity for me to be involved with
university athletics at the highest level in Canada,” states Atkinson.

Atkinson is married to wife, Janice, and they have one daughter, Kelsi
aged 11.
