SPECIALTY
The integrative physiology of respiratory and cardiovascular systems during exercise in health and disease and how these systems can be manipulated to optimally alter disease progression and health status.
CURRENT WORK
The current focus of our laboratory is aimed at understanding how expiratory flow limitation, dynamic changes in lung volume and lung mechanics affect functional capacity. In particular, we are interested in how compromised respiratory muscle function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cause symptoms of dyspnea during exertion. We are also investigating how altered lung mechanics affect cardiac function in patients with cardiorespiratory disorders. These investigations will improve understanding of how the respiratory system limits exercise capacity and will also provide insight on how these limitations can be manipulated to increase the efficacy of exercise rehabilitation. A final focus of our research is examining the inflammatory responses associated with both acute and chronic exercise to try and improve understanding of how exercise rehabilitation may affect the progression of respiratory disorders.
DESIRED OUTCOME
Through a better understanding of how disease processes impact the physiological responses to exercise, our goal is to devise new strategies directly aimed at improving the treatment of individuals with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
