RESEARCH INTERESTS
There are three areas of motor behaviour that Dr. Welsh considers to be his primary research interests. These areas include selective attention, cerebral specialization for movement and movement-related processes in average and special populations, and the neural basis of coordinated movement. In addition, he has been involved with, and intends on continuing, studies of the processes involved in learning new motor skills. It is Dr. Welsh’s general belief that, under optimal learning and working conditions, most people with movement disorders can be contributing members of the community. The objective of his research is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie the goal-directed actions of individuals from average and special populations. Once this detailed knowledge of the processes underlying movement has been developed, it is hoped that the scientific and clinical communities can work together to create the optimal rehabilitative, learning, and working conditions necessary to facilitate the performance of all members of society.
